Using someone else’s USB flash drive in your computer may be extremely dangerous because you don’t know how the other person’s system is protected. The other person may not have Avast Antivirus installed and USB sticks are usually an easy way to catch an virus infection. To catch such malware infection your computer doesn’t even need to have an Internet connection.

Therefore we strongly suggest to run the Avast scan for removable media to make sure the inserted USB flash drive is clean. Steps to perform this scan are very simple and really everyone can make it.

1. Insert the USB Flash Drive and Open the Avast Interface

Insert the USB stick into your computer. Wait after all drivers are installed, and make sure you see it as an additional drive in the system. Do not copy/execute any files before you finish this scan procedure.

Then go to your Avast interface by double-clicking on the orange icon in the Windows system tray. Or you can find Avast in the Windows Start » All Programs » Avast. Once you’re in go to ‘Protection’ in the left menu, and select ‘Antivirus‘ from the hoverable menu menu.

Once the Other scans page will appear, select ‘USB / DVD Scan‘ (tile with the flash disk icon).

Before you start the actual scan, we recommend to adjust its settings a bit, so no virus or malware on the USB is missed.

2. Tweak the USB Scan Settings

By default the scan settings are quite loose. We will make them as strict as possible so no virus on the flash drive will escape!

Avast app for windows phone. Click on the cog wheel icon » ‘Scan‘ and scroll down to check option ‘All files‘. Then move to ‘Sensitivity‘ page and set ‘Heuristics‘ level to ‘High‘ and check options ‘Test whole files (may be very slow for big files)‘ and ‘Follow links during scan‘.

Then move to menu item ‘Packers‘ and check option ‘All packers‘ to include all archive types in the scan. Confirm by clicking on the ‘OK‘ button.

3. Run the USB Scan and See the Results

Now everything is set, so just click on the tile ‘USB / DVD Scan‘ and wait until the scan is finished. Since we have set a strict settings it may take a while.

After the scan is complete you will see the results. If there is no danger, you will see a green message saying ‘Great! No issues found‘. Then you can go ahead and start using the scanned USB flash drive.

Unfortunately it’s not possible to schedule the scan automatically when you insert flash disk or DVD into your computer. Therefore we recommend running it manually every time you are using a new (and unknown) removable media.

We look forward to helping out and thank you for downloading Avast! Avast for mac download free.
