Most Mac models introduced in 2012 or later are compatible with macOS Mojave, and you can upgrade directly from OS X Mountain Lion or later.
I tried rebooting several times in this way, always with the same result. Visit the macOS Mojave page on the App Store, then click the Get button. After downloading, the installer opens automatically.
